kizhi Massage

Kizhi massage is a therapeutic Ayurvedic treatment that involves the application of heated herbal poultices to the body. The word “Kizhi” translates to “bundle” in Malayalam, the language of the southern Indian state of Kerala where Ayurveda has deep roots.

“During a Kizhi massage, the therapist prepares small linen bags or poultices filled with a combination of various herbs, medicinal powders, rice, or other therapeutic substances. These poultices are then warmed in medicated oils or herbal-infused oils before being applied to specific areas of the body or the entire body, depending on the individual’s condition.”

There are different types of Kizhi massage, each using distinct herbal ingredients. Some common types include:

  1. Podi Kizhi: This uses a poultice filled with herbal powders like dry ginger, black gram, and other medicinal herbs.
  2. Ela Kizhi: It involves poultices filled with medicinal leaves, often from herbs like neem, calotropis, or castor.
  3. Navara Kizhi: This uses poultices filled with cooked Navara rice, milk, and various herbs.

Once the poultices are heated, the therapist gently massages the body using these warm bundles in a rhythmic manner. The heat from the poultices, combined with the therapeutic properties of the herbs, aids in relieving muscle tension, improving blood circulation, promoting lymphatic drainage, and reducing inflammation. The massage also helps in detoxification and relaxation, making it beneficial for various health conditions.

Kizhi massage is commonly used to treat conditions like:

  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Arthritis
  • Back pain
  • Rheumatism
  • Sports injuries
  • Stress and anxiety

The treatment is generally well-tolerated, but as with any Ayurvedic therapy, it is essential to consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before undergoing Kizhi massage. The practitioner will assess your specific health needs and recommend the most suitable type of Kizhi and herbs to be used during the massage. Kizhi massage is often combined with other Ayurvedic treatments to provide a comprehensive healing approach based on an individual’s unique constitution and health condition.
